Problem:

To gather details around homeownership and the perception of homes within a target demographic.

Solution:
We developed a multi-method research approach to gather the insights required. The approaches used were:
1.  General surveys
2.  Cultural Probes
3.  In-home interviews

The general surveys helped narrow down components of interest within the target demographic. The cultural probes (which are visualized above) were take-home research kits which were designed to allow the participants to tell us their story about their home and neighborhood. This method was very valuable because we were able to gather perspectives, images, and opinions that would’ve been difficult to get with a mediated research approach (like shadowing or focus groups). We then moved into in-home interviews to hear first-hand some of the experiences outlined by the cultural probe.
